The monograph by Benedikts Kalnačs, Turning Point. Rūdolfs Blaumanis in Latvian and European Literature, offers an in-depth analysis of the creative work of Rūdolfs Blaumanis, viewing it in the broad context of European literature. Kalnačs’s work highlights the importance of Blaumanis’s literary heritage in the process of formation and consolidation of Latvian culture, the connection with German culture and European literary trends. For the first time in the research of Blaumanis’s creative work, an in-depth study of the influence of popular culture and the parallels between writing and artistic processes has been carried out. Kalnačs’s book shows the need for a modern revision of classic literary works in order to highlight their enduring values. The monograph demonstrates respect for the previous research tradition while offering new perspectives of interpretation and analysis based on a comparative and interdisciplinary outlook.
