Review of the monograph Satesele Castle and Land published by Zinātne Publishers in Latvian and English. It is the most extensive publication on the history and research of Satesele hillfort and its surroundings. The book is a joint work of three authors, scientific collaborators of Turaida Museum Reserve. Dr. Guntis Zemītis writes about life in Satesele hillfort from the 11th to the 13th century and archaeological material that conforms it. Ligita Beitiņa expounds about the people of Satesele from the 13th to the 18th century. Egils Jemeljanovs writes about Satesele hillfort as a tourist and sightseeing object in the 19th and 20th centuries. The book describes the archaeological research on Satesele hillfort under the leadership of Guntis Zemītis in 2005 and 2006, which was carried out by Turaida Museum Reserve in cooperation with Sigulda County Council, the Institute of Latvian History of the University of Latvia, and the Institute of Latvian Archaeological Association. A catalogue of antiquities found in those excavations is provided. The book contains numerous illustrations – pictures, maps, tables, postcards, and photos of artefacts found in archaeological excavations. The book suits for both professional historical researchers in Latvia and abroad as well as for people interested in history, and, of course, for residents of Sigulda and its surroundings, and the visitors.
