The article briefly describes the Latvian composers living in Germany who during the first five-year period after the war came under the influence of musical innovation prevailing in Western Europe and felt the need to follow the spirit of the time in their music, while still preserving their national peculiarity. For mature composers, changing their style in the name of innovation proved somehow problematic, but the young ones, who were just starting their career, mostly quickly and fruitfully adapted to the atmosphere of European music, its modernism and raised the prestige of Latvian sound art in the world.
