The article is an updated and supplemented address by Zbigņevs Stankevičs, author of the book Quo vadis, Western World? Surprising Analysis by Bernhardt Welte, at the opening ceremony of the book, which took place at the National Library of Latvia on 19 April 2022. The author of the article reveals the idea and origin of the book, emphasises the phenomenon of changing epochs, and analyses in greater detail the three concepts characterising the time of modernity, as well as their influence, which have been highlighted by the German philosopher and theologian Bernhardt Welte in his study of the problems of religion in the modern context. These are the following: the concept of  progress, the calculating mind, the cult crisis.
