Once Sēlija (Selonia) was incorporated into the regulatory framework of the country as
the fifth historical land of Latvia, a necessity arose to create of a coat of arms of Sēlija, in order to create a unified heraldic ensemble of Latvian historical lands — along with Kurzeme, Vidzeme, Zemgale, and Latgale. This insight reveals the process behind the creation of the coat of arms of the historical land Sēlija — what historic symbols have been used in this coat of arms, what legal framework was necessary in order to create it, and what were the criteria that helped decide on what symbol would represent the new heraldic identity of the region.
